The BASE combines exceptional baseball and softball training and competition with academic and career resources to empower student athletes to achieve their full potential both on and off the field.
Founded in 2013 by Robert Lewis, Jr., The BASE builds on 30+ years of learning through the Boston Astros baseball program, which Mr. Lewis began in Boston’s Villa Victoria public housing in the 1970s. The BASE extends the Astros’ culture and builds upon the strong foundation of success.
The BASE engages and supports a growing network of youth baseball coaches, including many BASE/Astros alumni, and has built strong relationships with diverse leaders & institutions who are committed to changing minds, lives and the status quo – from the public, private & nonprofit sectors, in higher education, from the community & beyond.
Since inception, BASE Boston teams have traveled to Chicago each summer to play local teams on the West Side and South Side, and local Chicago teams have traveled to Boston to play in the annual Boston Urban Baseball Classic. Building on strong and committed relationships forged over these years of partnership, The BASE is excited to launch The BASE Chicago in 2018.
The BASE model plays a key role in shifting the national mindset and re-imagining pathways to success for urban youth. We believe in acting our way into a new way of thinking, not thinking our way into a new way of acting.
The BASE operates a premier national urban youth academy that combines sports and academic opportunities through a methodology that cultivates excellence, belief and love. We make the invisible, visible and shine a spotlight on the limitless potential of our young people.
The BASE and Boston Astros have served over 8,000 boys and girls on more than 600 teams, competing not only locally but also nationally and internationally — from Florida, Virginia, Nevada and Chicago to Japan and the Dominican Republic.
Hall of Fame award-winning baseball writer Peter Gammons has called the BASE Astros “hands down, the best urban baseball team in America.”
The BASE Astros were named “2013 Triple Crown Sports’ US Baseball Champions” and “2012 Team of The Year” (besting 40,000 other teams across the country).
Several former BASE/Boston Astros players competed or are currently competing in the MLB: Manny Delcarmen, with the Boston Red Sox; Juan Carlos Portes, with the Minnesota Twins; Nelfi Zapata, with the New York Mets; Eddy Morabel, with the Texas Rangers; Jamill Moquete, with the Baltimore Orioles; Calvin Graves, with the Chicago Cubs; Pat Ruotolo, with the San Francisco Giants; and Ben Bowden, with the Colorado Rockies.
Since 2014, 150+ BASE student athletes have matriculated to college, career training or the workforce.
