The BASE provides student athletes with year-round, superior baseball and academic training, access to college fairs and showcases, professional visits and academic scholarships available through partnerships with several colleges and universities throughout the country.
The BASE also trains and supports a growing network of youth baseball coaches, many of whom are BASE/Astros alumni. The organization has built a strong set of relationships with government, private sector, community leaders, colleges and universities, other not-for-profits, private foundations, and individuals who are committed to changing minds, lives and the status quo.
The BASE model plays a key role in shifting the national mindset and re-imagining pathways to success for urban youth. We believe in acting our way into a new way of thinking, not thinking our way into a new way of acting.
The BASE operates a premier national urban youth training academy which combines sports and academic opportunities with a methodology that cultivates excellence, belief and love. We are making the invisible, visible and shining a spotlight on the limitless potential of our young people.
The BASE has served over 8,000 boys and girls on more than 600 teams, playing not just at home in Boston, but in tournaments across the country — from Florida to Nevada and in between.
Famed Sports Illustrated sportswriter Peter Gammons called the Astros (The BASE) “hands down, the best urban baseball team in America.”
The Astros (The BASE) were named “2013 Triple Crown Sports’ US Baseball Champions”, and “2012 Team of The Year” (besting 40,000 other teams across the country).
Six former BASE (and Astros) student athletes are currently competing at The Major League Baseball level: Manny Delcarmen formerly of The Boston Red Sox, Juan Carlos Portes formerly of The Minnesota Twins, Nelfi Zapata of The New York Mets, Eddy Morabel of The Texas Rangers, Jamill Moquete of The Baltimore Orioles, and Calvin Graves of The Chicago Cubs.
Since 2014, 130+ school athletes have matriculated to college.
